A Poet with a Camera: The Cinema of Sarah Maldoror

‘I’m shrouded in black, in mystery. I’m Black… And I love movies – that’s all there is to it!’
– Sarah Maldoror

This exploration of an intimate and poetic body of work highlights a filmmaker whom history almost erased. Her highly subversive, revolutionary and very African cinema also reveals her love for the arts and commitment to exist as a woman and filmmaker. It also highlights her constant and unwavering support for her partner – her compagnon de route – the Angolan poet and politician Mário de Andrade.

Sarah Maldoror took her destiny in her own hands, becoming a rare Black woman to make films, her cinema motivated by a need to bear witness to the realities of people rarely seen on screen. The African struggle was where she began, but her body of work encompassed politics and culture around the world.
